18 Wheels of Steel Across America

Rolling down the highway in an 18-wheeler is many people’s dream and now they can do it in front of their computers. While a number of games has been based on galactic trading none has been based on the way we trade and transport goods on earth, pretty strange if you think about it.

In 18 Wheels of Steel Across America (18 WSAA) you are running a trucking company and your task is to transport different kinds of goods across America. The goods you are transporting are anything from milk to aeroplanes and tractors.

You earn money depending on what you are transporting and how far away you have to take it. So transporting grain from Seattle to Great Falls isn’t as profitable as transporting cars from New York to Los Angeles.

Also competitors are stealing your market shares. So you have to be faster and more reliable than them to beat them. If you choose to transport from only one city you will become a preferred courier of that city after a while, which means that your competitors has lost market shares in that area.

As you probably have figured out much of this game is set inside your truck rolling down the highway. There are several trucks to choose from, the only problem is that you have to find the truck dealers yourself (the phone book doesn’t exist in the game).  The truck dealers are located along the highways, so you are encouraged to take new routes to discover them.

After a while you will want to upgrade your truck so that it can go faster, handle better and look prettier. There are several upgrades to choose from, new engine, brakes, tires, skins and other stuff.

The scenery in the game is pretty neat. Ok the graphics isn’t great but the whole game is set across the USA on a nearly authentic map. So you really feel that you are trucking. However driving can be quite boring after a while.

There is music to the game, only rock songs without any vocals so they loose in appeal after just a couple of minutes. However if you open your own music player behind the game it actually becomes pretty nice.

Also you can’t drive as you please, speeding past a police car will get you a fine. Driving on the wrong side of the road, hitting cars and such will also result in fines.

When you earned a substantial amount of money you can hire truckers to work for you. This will mean that your company grows even faster and after a while you will have a small trucking empire to take care of, actually it takes care of itself.

I love this game because it lets gamers play professions, that really exists and many people are making a living on it. There aren’t many trucking games out there and I think the developers really did a great job.
