Battle Fleet 39

I have been on the look out for a naval game about World War 2 for a long time now so I was very happy when I found this game. In Battle Fleet 1939 you are the commander through many famous naval campaigns done during World War 2. It can be anything from escorting convoys over the Atlantic to storming enemy ports in the pacific.

You can play as American, British, Japanese or German and there are three difficulty levels. Already this game has shown a lot of diversity, which keeps it from becoming boring. There is also a lot of scenarios for the player to complete. I really like extensive games especially these days when short games like Unreal II is flooding the market.

The enemy is actually very smart. At one scenario I was trying to get my fleet through a small passage, I though to myself that if I would be the enemy I would place a couple of submarines in the passage. Then I reminded myself that this is a computer game and that would not be happening. Then all the sudden my ships taking hits and four of them were destroyed. Believe it or not the enemy had placed two submarines in the gap. The game put on a show in intelligent AI.

Battle Fleet 1939 is very fun to play and can keep you occupied for ages. The strange thing is that the developer published a game that uses 256 colors and 800x600. This is to old settings for modern games and naturally this will bring down the score. A heads up if you are running this game on Windows XP, it will attack your themes, it removed my nifty desktop background. I don’t think that the game did it but rather some setting in Windows automatically doing it when the colors turn to 256 colors, but I’m not sure.

However this is a great game, but would have been greater if it used some more modern specifications and also more compatibility with Windows XP wouldn’t be such a bad thing. I would recommend this game to anyone who love those old war documentaries running on Discovery, this game is surely a good one.
