In Raptor you are a pilot flying a state of the art fighter jet in a futuristic environment. Think G-Type, which we reviewed a week ago but instead of seeing it from the side you see it from above.

Raptor was released in 1994 and with the standards back then this game was very high-tech. For example the cut-scenes between the missions are in very good quality even with today’s standards.

There are several sectors in the game, bravo sector and so on. Each sector has a couple of levels with bosses at the end of each level. Overall the different sectors provide enough diversity so that the game doesn’t slip in to boredom.

The enemies you encounter are not very intelligent, they have different moves and behave differently depending on the model of the enemy. Other than that they are not very hard to beat. However the bosses are another story, in the beginning they are quite easy but they get harder and harder to beat. The games naturally become harder when you increase the difficulty level.

Between each level you can equip your fighter with different weapons, shields and bombs. Many of the weapons are quite nice, however the developers didn’t have the imagination to do them very differently from the real world.

Thankfully your ship is equipped with shields. When the enemies fire at your ship the shields protect you from the impact. But after a while the shield wear off and that’s the point were you usually get blown into pieces. For each enemy you hit you get a certain amount of cash, which you can buy additional equipment for.

Overall Raptor is a good game with good sounds and very entertaining. What I’m missing though is a story that doesn’t exist. So it will be a score of nine instead of a ten.
