Worms seem to be the most dangerous and hostile creatures in the world, at least if you believe game developers. In Worminator 3 the creatures’ hostile behaviour continues as the worm world is at war once again.

Worminator 3 comes with a pretty extensive story that features a nuclear war, a rebel force and a rebel leader being blown up in a nuclear plant explosion. The story is humorous and proves that the developers have a huge imagination.

If you have played platform games like Duke Nukem (which Worminator 3 resembles) you will instantly feel at home. The game has the same kind of controls and concept, and presents few new features. However that doesn’t have to be bad if the concept is made with care and quality.

There are a number of enemies that you will encounter, everything from robots to rebel worms on patrol. A great part of the enemy force is the bosses which always put fear into the player and gives a number of surprises.

Worminator 3 includes a pile of weapons, twelve to be exact. There are mini-guns, rocket launchers and laser aimed shotguns (cool feature by the way). Most of the weapons are pretty standard in games like this and they don’t give many surprises.

One part of the game that should be praised is the level design, especially in episode 2 where you are inside something living, probably a human (but we can’t be sure). The levels also have a couple of sub quests like recovering artefacts for some tribe, they are all in all fun and add a lot to the game play.

If you are playing these kinds of games for the first time you might get a bit frustrated. Worminator 3 is hard, maybe one of the toughest platformers I’ve ever played (and I played quite a few). What’s a bit strange is that the first part of the game is harder to play than the second. On some levels you have multiple enemies to keep track on, while keeping track of where you are going and in the meantime dodging bullets from flying robots. So Worminator 3 is more for seasoned players.

Obviously we didn’t try Worminator 3 because we were impressed by the graphics. But they do deserve to be analyzed. Overall they are not that great, looks like a mixture between Duke Nukem 2 and Worms 2. What I do like about the graphics is the great details; if you look closely you will always notice something new, so it’s hard to get tired of them.

One should also ask how good graphics are needed in a platform game. There are lots of 2nd generation platformers with 3D graphics that more or less wrecked the game play.

Garret Thompson has created a great soundtrack for this game using MIDI. It sounds 80s with some synth but better, too bad there are few tracks included.

Worminator 3 is a very extensive game; if this game wasn’t for free you wouldn’t feel robbed. There are so many features and details in the game, on top of that you also get a level editor where you can let loose your imagination.

Considering that Worminator 3 was developed by just a few people and for free I can only give this game the highest score there is, it provides great replay value, lots of details, a funny story and solid game play.
