Medieval Britain

Battle your way through the middle ages in this strategy game, but does it have what it takes? Medieval Britain is set during the middle ages in Europe and parts of Asia and is concentrated on war. The player can choose between different factions, which existed during the Middle Ages. After that you will start with a castle and your only aim is to overtake all other castles.

The job doesnít get any easier by the fact that you have three bars that you constantly need to monitor. The bars are revenue, economy and defense. If you for example choose to make more revenues in one castle that will be to the expense of the economy in that castle. If you choose to build up the economy you will make more revenues in the future.

In each castle you can build different units, such as knights, catapults, swordsmen and many others. These are the units you will use to overtake other castles. Actually the battles are not very advanced at all, if you have some catapults and a couple of knights and swordsmen you will probably come a long way. The computer is very aggressive but not very clever. For example it is constantly trying to storm your castle with a small number of units constantly loosing instead of gathering a large army and then attack.

The graphics are perhaps not the best. However they do the job but it would be nice with some extra effects. However the major problem is that there are few options to defeat your enemies, the whole game is based on overtaking castles. You canít trade with other castles, there is no diplomacy, and quite few units to use in the warfare.

Also you canít do much to affect the outcome of the battles taking place, for example you canít move your troops individually they just meet with other enemy troops, a couple of sounds and the battle is over. These faults creates a game that eventually becomes very one sided. Iím also a fan of great powerful sound effects, and Iím a bit disappointed of the lame sounds coming from this game.

However the setting of the game is perfect, there are surely a lot of medieval games but no one with so many geographic options as this one. Also itís fascinating that you only use three slider bars to control your castles, not very advanced but at least itís simple and easy to understand. I believe that fans of these types of games might like it, at least for a couple of hours. Iím giving it a slightly higher score than it perhaps deserves; this is mainly for the slider bars, which is a nice feature and for the 8 player multi player options that should be more fun than the single player mode.
