Star General

Is Star General just like Panzer General but in space? Read our review to find out.

The computer gaming community has been blessed with a lot of good war games set in space. SSI obviously wanted a piece of the cake and released Star General back in 1996.

At first glance one might actually think that this is just a version of Panzer General but in space. The hexagon grid is still in place as well as the turn based moves. Graphically the game isn’t much different either. However after playing Star General for a whole you notice a lot of differences.

A major difference is that this game is not only about battles. It’s also about building units and managing resources. There are two different types of units in the game, space ships and ground units. Say that your mission is to take over a planet; the first step is to secure the space around the planet then call in transports with ground units. When the ground units enter the planet the battle goes from space to the planet surface. This is actually a really nice concept and it makes the game more extensive and fun to play.

Each space ship has its own characteristics depending on which civilization it belongs to. There are also several classes of ships, such as destroyers, frigates and so on. The larger ones usually kill the smaller ships like flies. This is not very realistic since larger ships should be slower to maneuver and thereby very vulnerable to many smaller vessels.

When it comes to the ground wars on planets the battles works like in Panzer General. You have to back up your forces with artillery and air units to succeed. But there are also a lot more strategy involved, for example setting up formations and so on.

It’s a bit disappointing that Star General is missing a general story. It would have been quite simple to create one similar to Star Wars but not as good. A story would definitely add to the game a lot. There are six civilizations in the game; Xritra, Khalian, Fleet, Cephian, Schleinel and Hressa that you can play. However you don’t get much background information about them in the game. Each civilization has their own ships and units however, so that really makes the game more extensive and interesting.

The soundtrack in the game is really good and composed by Rich Rhodes and Danny Pelfrey. It really creates an intergalactic experience that adds to the game.

Star General is a good space strategy game, no question about it. However the lack of story and background information in the game is quite disappointing. Also you can tell that the game is a bit old since the graphics are out of date. I can easily recommend Star General to sci-fi fans and desktop generals who have grown tired of the regular warfare games out there.
