The Game of the Year at the Independent Game Festival is reviewed; does it measure up to the reputation?

Wik and the Fable of Souls is truly an inspiring game, you know from the beginning that you are in for a very special experience.

Wik is indeed a very special chap. He looks a little bit like something out of the Goblins game series mixed with Abe in the Oddworld game series and a lizard. Anyway Wik lives in the woods and he has a very long and flexible tongue, which he uses to catch insects and little green grubs.

Wik notice one day that the forest is packed with green grubs, the grubs are fairly peaceful animals but Wik sense that something is wrong. The game is basically about collecting the grubs, which isn’t that easy.

From time to time insects will come and pick up the grubs, so you have to act fast. The game is very much a puzzle game but with some touches of platform games. However there are two modes in which you can play the game. One is more action oriented (the story mode) and the other one more puzzle oriented (challenge mode).

As you already know Wik’s tongue is very important. Not only do you use it to collect things, you also use it to move around. Since the tongue sticks to things its ideal to climb with and rope your way up platforms.

The controls in the Fable of Souls are very innovative. The player only uses the mouse to control Wik. So you won’t have to keep several key combinations in mind when playing.

Graphically the game is great, I really enjoy the backgrounds, which looks a bit like a game from Lucas Arts. Also Wik and the enemies are modelled with great detail.

Wik and the Fable of Souls also come with a great soundtrack and a ton of levels that will keep you occupied for days. This is truly one of the best independent games out there and to be quite frank it whips many commercial games hard.
