YS Flight Simulator System 2000 is an attempt to create a free alternative to Microsoft’s Flight Simulator series. The game has a lot more features than it’s many competitors, something you will notice instantly.

There are a number of aircrafts in the game. Besides the regular US and Russian fighter aircrafts you also have passenger jets, such as the Boeing 747. You can also try flying the heavy US B-52 bomber, the Swedish fighter jet Viggen, Concorde and many many other planes.

The simulation is not as detailed in plane characteristics as in commercial flight simulators. However I think that the developers have done a good job in making the planes as diverse as possible. You really notice that you are flying one of the largest bombers in the world when you take the B-52 for a spin.

Controlling the aircrafts is a bit different from other competitors. As default you control the aircrafts using the mouse, the mouse works pretty much as a joystick and is actually a very good solution. You can also choose to use the keyboard if you want to, but the mouse is more precise.

Graphically the game is nowhere near the commercial flight simulators. There are no real textures on the planes and the ground is just green and the sky blue. Looks like a flight simulator from the 80s.

Sure the bad graphics makes it possible to play the game on low-end systems like a Pentium 150 MHz. But to be quite honest you could play Microsoft Flight Simulator with even lower system requirements, with better graphics.

The sound is another problem in the game, the sound of the engines is very similar to when you run your lawnmower over gravel. There is nothing powerful at all, pretty disappointing really.

YS Flight 2000 has no pre-programmed flights, but it’s easy to create your own flights. You can select to take off from an aircraft carrier and go in to close dogfights. The AI is pretty good in the dogfights. Even better is when you choose to play in a network. Then you can dogfight against friends, or enemies for that matter.

The player can also select to just fly around with a Concorde and do nothing, so there are definitely a number of alternatives.

What I like about YS Flight 2000 is mainly the many different planes that you can try and the diversity of the missions that you can create. However the game needs some work on the graphics and sounds to make it to the top.
