It’s always nice with games that are completely different from the rest, Sim Life is one of those games. In the game you are creating and designing life, sounds strange? It is, at least in the beginning since you are not mentally used to something like this.

The game itself and the controls are pretty straightforward; you use different tools to create conditions for life. These are the moister, temperature and higher tools, each one of them essential for life to grow. After a while of tool use vegetation will start to grow and after a while new animals will enter the world.

What’s interesting is that you can design the animals the way you want them, for example mixing an alligator and a parrot with a goat creates an animal capable of flying, but that can be in the water and climbs hills or perhaps eats grass. After you have created your animal you can name it to something suitable. There are also options like changing the gene pool diversity and the mating differences. You can also go into stunning detail when you create your animals and change their genes and characteristics.

You can also control the amount of food in the world; you can mutate animals, plant toxic substances and virtually anything else. The graphics in the game are a bit boring, when your animals are entering they are displayed as tiny icons, but it's fun to watch them move around though.

Also the environment is displayed by icons, red ones for too hot, yellow and green ones for moderate and blue for too cold. Not really what you might expect in a modern game but remember this one is published in 1992. On the main menu there are different scenarios you can play, for example creating life in an inhospitable desert, or manage a world full of dinosaurs. The scenarios are very different so the games last a bit longer this way.

Sim Life is perhaps not a real computer game, more an educational simulator, but it’s a really nice game that’s very different from what you are used to today. The game can be used for educational purposes but also for some playful and fun life creation, also the fact that Maxis has combined something fun with education is nice.
