You don’t see Christmas editions of games any longer.  In 1993 DMA Design made a Christmas edition of Lemmings, complete with snowmen, Santa clauses, trees and all other gimmicks that is part of our Christmas traditions.

Lemmings are perhaps one of the most successful games ever developed. The concept is simple; make sure that the little Lemmings creatures survive through a platform level full of hazards. Of course the Lemming creatures isn’t the brightest of the bunch, so you have to guide them.

In he beginning of the game you will have to guide them over cliffs, dig tunnels, build bridges and supply the Lemmings with umbrellas so that they don’t fall to their death. Later on you have to avoid meat grinders and other very dangerous machines. The Lemmings are fast so you have to decide what to do instantly.  This game is full of stress, you have to be fast in your decision-making.

Lemmings X-mas is naturally full of Christmas gimmicks and stuff. The graphics makes you feel a little cosy around the holidays (which is the purpose). But as you might understand this game isn’t that fun during the spring or summer.

To guide the creatures you have to click on different symbols to apply umbrellas, start bridge building and so on. I find it difficult to see what the different icons symbolize, mainly because of the grainy graphics. So in the beginning of the game a lot of Lemmings will loose their lives because you click the wrong symbols.

The game also has several Christmas tunes to add to the excitement. They aren’t exactly ear candy, but they do the trick however after a while you might want to turn them off.

Lemmings X-mas edition is a nice game and is recommended if you have played Lemmings before. The game is much harder than previous versions so you’ll get sort of frustrated at times. For beginners I would go for the original game.
