When this game was released in 1997 it sparked a furious debate
about computer game violence. In Grand Theft Auto you are an undercover cop on a
mission to infiltrate criminal organizations in different cities.
Not a very great story perhaps but still a story. What you mainly do in
GTA however is to drive around in different cars completing missions.
You usually get a mission on a pay phone from some notorious gangster in the
area. The missions can be anything from driving a getaway car to assassinations.
For each mission you complete you earn cash, at a certain level of cash you get
a new city unlocked. There are a total of three cities in the game, Liberty City
(based on New York), San Andreas (San Francisco) and Vice City (Miami).
Now of course the police in each city are very alert and you have to complete
your business very discretely to not get attention from the police. The level of
attention you are getting from the police is called police level, the higher the
level the more police units engaged in finding you. At the highest level the
police put up roadblocks and shoots at your car with machine guns.
The AI for the police isn’t very good, they usually just follow you until
they get you at all costs, however trying to avoid the police in car chases are
very entertaining. The music in Grand Theft Auto deserves some mentioning the
tracks are recorded by a band and ranges from country music to rap. You can
change radio station in your car by pressing F5. In the game the different radio
stations and music definitely creates a great atmosphere.
Grand Theft Auto is seen completely from above, the view is quite original
but the graphics aren’t that stunning. If you are the lucky owner of a 3Dfx
graphics card you can enjoy a bit better graphics. However the graphics play a
small role in a game like this, the entertainment brought by the game plays a
much more important role.
The game is violent, no questions about that, however the violence isn’t that
graphic as in Grand Theft Auto 3 or other games. Also the violence usually has
some sort of meaning, what I really hate in computer games and movies are
violence without a point. However I believe that DMA really have made a good
balance between what can be considered violence with a point and without.
I believe that this game is great, there are no flaws as I know of, some
people might find it boring after a while and that’s why I can’t give it the top
score. But if you love car chases and good games this is so worth your
hard-earned money.
