COR Entertainment recently released the sequel to Alien Arena 2007, we try out the revamped game in this review.

The changes in Alien Arena 2008 are better looking textures, characters and effects. COR Entertainment also focused on getting better performance out of the game compared to its predecessor.  Alien Arena 2008 now has a more dark and serious tone according to the developers.

Maybe the most noticeable change is the Galaxy client that starts when you click your Alien Arena 2008-icon. Using the client you can join online games and chat to fellow Alien Arena players. The Galaxy client is actually annoying, the menu-texts are hard to read and boy is it slow.  You are lucky if it takes 30 seconds to get a list of available servers, most of the time the darn thing stops responding.

Anyway when the Galaxy client manages to launch a game you instantly notice that Alien Arena 2008 isn’t one of the most popular online games out-there. There are few players on the servers, and only a few servers seem to be active and moderated.

The game-play in Alien Arena 2008 resembles Quake III Arena, which isn’t that surprising since the Alien Arena series is based on the game. Alien Arena 2008 provides fast-paced action and forcing the player’s to make split-second decisions. However the original game-concept is nine years old and it just seems boring compared to competing games like Warrock.

Graphically the game looks commercial, which in this case means great. I haven’t been able to spot any flaws at all. The revamped engine also delivers the great looking graphics at a good frame rate, even when cranking up the details.

With Alien Arena 2008 you get 46 maps and 6 different characters to use. There are also several new interesting weapons; even nicer is that each weapon has an alternative fire. The game has improved the weapon balancing, which means that the rocket-launcher isn’t as powerful as in Alien Arena 2007.

Alien Arena 2008 comes with a pretty neat sound-track, some of the tracks are very good and dramatic, as always there are exceptions but as a whole it’s nice.

I understand that this review might seem ranting on a game that’s completely free made by developers who have worked hard on this game. Yes Alien Arena 2008 is not bad; there is a huge effort that has been put into this game. Sadly the concept behind the game is getting older and older; players don’t want to run around shooting each other in arenas. Instead it seems like the whole FPS-business is moving towards realistic shooters, and Alien Arena 2008 isn’t one of them.

The good stuff in Alien Arena 2008 is the graphics, soundtrack and the flash-backs it provides from playing Quake III Arena and Unreal Tournament.  If I were COR Entertainment I would abandon Alien Arena 2008 and try something else with an alien-twist because this game is just not sustainable.
