If there has ever been one statement that rang true throughout all time its this: “Everyone loves pirates” so when Monkey Island 1: The Secret of Monkey Island just wasn’t enough for all you scallywags out there, Lucas Arts set sail for the next big pirate adventure for all you PC gamers, Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge.

Monkey Island 2 continues the plot of Monkey Island 1.  The gamer still controls Guybrush Threepwood on his pirate adventures, through his attempts to swash more buckles and batten down more hatches.  The world of Monkey Island 2 has been greatly expanded from Monkey Island 1 and Guybrush experiences adventure at many different locales each with its own unique flavor, and its own breed of humorous inhabitants.  The game is longer too, and is bound to have you spending quite a few more hours on it, than the original Monkey Island.

The gameplay is essentially the same when all things are said and done.  You still use the mouse to point and click, as in every adventure type game.  The same commands are available to you, look, take, talk, and so on.  Gameplay is nearly the same as Monkey Island 1.  Duels are still done in the same humorous pirate style of witty banter versus witty banter.  Puzzles are still plentiful and challenging and will keep the gears in your head turning over their solutions for some time.  In fact, there is very little different in gameplay from Monkey Island 1 to Monkey Island 2 and this is by far a good thing.  Lucas Arts found a formula that worked, and stuck with it, true to their piratey origins.

The graphics in Monkey Island 2 are an improvement over Monkey Island 1.  The game is more stylish, colorful, and easy on the eye than its predecessor, and overall tends to give the player a feeling of smoothness in transition from locale to locale.  The sprites and sprited backgrounds are more detailed, and Guybrush himself now has a more graphically enhanced sprite, which moves smoother and interacts with the background and items in the game more seamlessly.

The sound in Monkey Island 2 unfortunately has not improved over Monkey Island 1.  Although there is a slight increase in clarity, it isn’t really enough to be a noticeable improvement.  In addition, there are less musical tracks in Monkey Island 2, reducing the tune catchiness that made Monkey Island 1 so memorable.  Luckily, the game finds itself with the same strengths as its predecessor as well.  Therefore, the sound dosen’t detract from the game or lessen the experience whatsoever, and instead, generally can be looked at as a slight flaw in an otherwise magnificent game.

Monkey Island 2 is an amusing pirate adventure game that lives up to the first title in the series.  The story is vast and involving, and all your favorite characters such as Elaine and LeChuck return.  If you were a fan of the first game, pick up a copy of Monkey Island 2 and get pirating today!  If not, then play the first game again, realize you were originally wrong in your assessment, enjoy it, then play the sequel and enjoy it just as much.  Get to it, before I make ya walk the plank!  YAAAR!
