White Elephant continues their RIP-series with RIP 3, this time humans and anti-heroes teams up to save earth from an evil invasion.

RIP 3 comes with a pretty extensive story, which is presented in the beginning of the game in a marvel comic -style manner. The RIP 3 story has the usual elements of good and evil, a cruel dictator and a world parallel to our (the world of the dead). However in RIP 3 the good constitutes of humans and anti-heroes like Death, Halloween and Rock N’ Roll. This time there is also a battle droid character, which is pretty fun to play.

I like the comic-style graphics in the beginning of the game, they are extended with the story explained in text, I miss a narrator though since it would have made the story more alive and interesting.

If you have not played RIP before you would probably feel a bit uneasy about the controls. The game uses the mouse and the keyboard arrows. Using the mouse you can fire your weapon, and aim it. The arrow keys are used for movement in different directions. Even though it might be hard to learn in the beginning it’s a superior way of controlling a game, and taking advantage of the PC.

Graphically the game is prettier than its predecessors, but the changes are nominal in game. What really caught my eye is the menu graphics, which are more dynamic. A portrait of the character you are playing becomes the background in the menus, neat!

RIP 3 is an extensive game spanning 100 levels, and with a nice variety of them. Most of them are indoor in a research lab environment, but somehow Elephant Games managed to make the levels more interactive and fun. They now feature objects that you can blow up and different kinds of power ups.

Obviously the game comes packed with weapons, but also vehicles. The weapons range from simple plasma guns to tanks. There are also some mean enemies, the most noteworthy are the bosses. They are often large battle mechs with tons of weapons, just waiting to blast you away to another universe.

RIP 3 comes with a hot seat mode, where two players can play on the same system. It’s definitely more fun than it seems. The game also has the usual multiplayer options. The soundtrack in RIP 3 is a good fast paced music. It fits the game and you hardly notice that it’s there, but when you turn it off you kind of miss it.

RIP 3 is in my opinion one of the better shooters on the market, it’s definitely a must-have if you like arcade or shooter games. I believe that the developers have managed to evolve the series nicely and avoided the sequel plague that’s hitting the industry. But this game series will be quite a challenge to evolve further.
