Warfare online has been popular the last couple of years. It all started with
the Battlefield series, Warrock is an independent attempt to create a new online
FPS warfare game, will it succeed?
Ever since the release of Battlefield 1942 the hobby soldiers
around the world has been blessed with games like Battlefield 2, Joint Operations,
SWAT 4 and many others. However there have been few independent games in this
popular sector.
Warrock is still in BETA so you will have to take this review
with a grain of salt. Our policy is not to grade BETA-games. We gave the game
a test drive for about 2 months. The game is based on a story where Derbaran
Military and the NIU Mercenaries are at war.
The story needs work as the background is more unclear than
a Sunday morning after a night out. Needless to say the developers managed to
create some interesting missions which have a purpose. It could be securing
a road or a harbour. In theory this works great, in practice online players
run around not giving much attention to the mission.
What I would have wanted is a way to incorporate the purpose
of the missions in the game play. For example if you are to secure a highway
for a convoy include the convoy travelling through the streets forcing the online
players to protect it.
Warrock isn’t exactly the game to look at if you want
blistering graphics. However they do the job and they don’t look that
old. The computer specs for Warrock is really low, a Pentium III 800 MHz will
do. However the more processing power you got the more beautiful the game will
get.
As always with online games the experience is tied to the other
players on the server. But the general gameplay is quite addictive for a couple
of weeks. After that time you will often find the game boring and put it away.
However you often return to it and continue to play.
Warrock isn’t as realistic as you may want it to be. If
you ever done some shooting you know that taking a shot standing with a sniper
rifle and hit the target far away is nearly impossible. In Warrock this happens
all the time, the sniper rifle is also unbalanced as its way to easy to use
it with good results. If you fire an AT-rifle into an enemy soldier he will
in most cases survive, not very realistic. The game is filled with these kind
of problems, it is something that probably will be tweaked, keep in mind that
we are writing about a BETA version of the game.
The game includes a similar promotion system as Battlefield
2. During each game you will earn a certain amount of points and increase your
percent towards the next promotion. When you get promotion you get resources
so that you can buy new shiny weapons. There are a couple of interesting weapons
in Warrock, for example; UZI, Colt Assault Rifle,
Glock, MP5 among others. If you don’t like running around with puny assault
rifles you can always take a ride in a tank, helicopter, plane or boat.
Warrock is currently a free game, it is meant to go commercial
sometime soon. I must say that Warrock measures up well to the Battlefield series;
it’s not as fun as Battlefield 2 but close. If you like online warfare
you have to give it a test.
