The market is being
littered with fast arcade space shooters right now. We take a look at Warning
Forever, a Japanese space shooter, how does it stand out from the crowd?
Shooting objects
on the computer screen is almost as old as computers themselves. We have seen
games like Darius Gaiden, G-Type and crazy mods like Chicken Invaders 2. Warning
Forever is similar to the games above, but it still has its own kind of twist.
There is no real
story presented in the game, you only end up controlling some sort of small
fighter against large space cruisers. The cruiser’s load out differs from
level to level, but they do get bigger and get more guns. They constantly fire
at you and you have to take them out by firing back. The enemy ships are built
in modules, so shooting at one module will destroy only that module.
As for the AI in
the game I can only say that it’s adequate. The turrets on the enemy ships
fires at you after just a couple of milliseconds, but it’s fairly easy
to just change position to avoid the shots. However the game does get harder,
but that’s only because you encounter larger enemies with more turrets
and lasers on them.
Warning Forever
does have one characteristic, and that’s the graphics. It’s sort
of a mixture between old timers like Asteroids and never 3D shooters. Your ship
and the cruisers are drawn with green lines on a black background. Too simple,
but if you add the lightning effects and explosions it looks superb.
Learning and playing
the game is easy, it’s addictive but the rush that you get when you try
a new game disappears after a while, it simply fails to grab you. Perhaps because
the game lack a story? Playing the game does remind you of those times during
your youth when you went to the arcade halls to play asteroids, the problem
is that there is nothing new as Asteroids was back then.
The sound effects
in the game are not that great, and they are also scarce. It really hits rock
bottom when the enemy turrets fires, it sounds like some sort of machine gun,
not a powerful turret on a large space cruisers. Another downside is that there
is no music, a soundtrack would have made a more dynamic experience. It’s
also hard to understand the text in the game, much of the text is in Japanese.
Warning Forever
is really nice to look at and fun for a while. But it fails to hold you in a
firm grip, mainly because we have seen it all before in one form or another.
It could use an injection with more powerful sound effects, music and a solid
story.
