Is Modern Warfare ready to take on the competition? Or is it just another turn-based strategy game in the trash can.

It seems that game developers think that the future conflict will stand between the United States and China. Maybe it’s for practical purposes, all they have to do is to change the flag from the Soviet Union to China, rename a few units and make a new map.

Dataware has grabbed the China vs. United States plotline, and made the game Modern Warfare. I’m often surprised at the quality of games that come from alternative developers; most of them are quite good. Modern Warfare is not one of them.

When starting to game you are greeted by a menu made in Windows 3.1 style with windows generic buttons and text. On top of that you have to turn down your speakers because the music might render your ears useless. It’s hideous and you have to turn it off in the menus to be able to focus on the game.

Graphically the game won’t win any awards either. It resembles The Perfect General made in the 80s, the difference is that Modern Warfare is made in 2005. You can certainly expect a lot more from a modern shareware game.

The player can choose to play either as the USA or China. The real difference is only that you will have different units at your disposal. However they work the same, and have the same weaknesses.

What will strike you instantly is how extremely annoying the beep sound is that comes after each turn you have finished or when your units are attacked. After playing 20 turns you will definitely have gotten a good brain-wash. It’s not possible to turn off the particular sound, so you have to live it.

There are however far more serious issues with the game. For starters it’s heavily unbalanced and unrealistic. Artillery seems to be the supreme weapon in the whole game, it destroys other units from great range, it moves fast and it can’t be threatened by infantry, tanks or other surface attacks.

The only thing you as a player have to do is to move the artillery forward quickly so that you get the enemy in range and then you have won the battle, it’s that easy. The artillery is so strong that it wipes out whole tank battalions on one turn, no survivors, and it can defend itself against a tank battalion as well, even if the tank battalion is very close.

Modern Warfare is heavily unbalanced; it lacks a good soundtrack, good graphics and good AI. I could have been a bit lenient on the game if it was freeware, but now its shareware and it costs $14.95 to register.
