An evil emperor called Silver decides that he wants all women in the kingdom. His soldiers start gathering the women, one of them is your wife and a journey begins to rescue her.

This is the story behind Silver, a role playing game by Infogrames. The game was quite a surprised when it was released since no one had really expected it to be as good as it actually is. Silver resembles the Final Fantasy series quite a bit, but is more oriented towards fighting.

When starting the game you are surprised how long the loading times are. Even with a fast computer that’s much faster than anything that existed back in 1999 it takes some time to load the game. However when it’s finally loaded you notice that it was worth the waiting.

The graphics and environments in the game are simply beautiful. In the very beginning of the game you are at your grandfather’s cottage, it’s indeed a very idyllic scene. Also the Great Library that you will be presented with later on is so beautiful. Of course there are more levels that will make you drool.

I like that the developers have added a nice tutorial in the beginning so that you fully learn to master the somewhat unusual controls. To attack an enemy you hold down the CTRL key and the left mouse button then you move the mouse in different directions depending on what kind of attack you want to achieve.

It sounds complicated but it isn’t hard to learn and once you master it you really start to appreciate the system. You don’t need to find certain keys on the keyboard or go in to some submenu to fight, this means that you can respond faster against your enemies.

Enemies you will encounter ranges from the Emperors soldiers to really scary monsters. There are also smaller creatures called imps that is somewhat annoying and tries to overwhelm you in numbers.

During the game you are presented with a nice and soundtrack. Actually it deserves mentioning since it’s so beautiful and adds to the game like no other soundtrack I’ve ever heard. It’s sort of a mixture of classical music and some faster tunes; it resembles the Final Fantasy soundtrack some.

The game is unfortunately very linear. There are no room left to explore and you simply go on from the next level to the next. It’s a bit sad that the developers removed the exploration bit of the game that’s often so fun in RPGs.

Also you will meet a lot of persons, you can’t talk to all of them just some that have been enabled by the developers. It’s also a bit dull, in most other RPGs you can talk to all the persons you meet, even if they haven’t much to say.

Silver is a game that never gets boring, it’s not as big and doesn’t have all the elements that other RPGs have. You could say that it’s a role playing game for more action oriented players, not everyone will like every bit of it, but no one will dislike it. It’s a solid game that if sequels were made could have competed with the Final Fantasy series.
