We were many who enjoyed Blizzards Warcraft 2 when it was released some time ago. In 1998 Bungie Studios released something very similar to Warcraft 2, Myth 2.

The game starts with your unit (part of the Light Side) being sent to respond to a gang of hooligans attacking defenceless villagers. When the forces arrive you instantly notice that the attackers are not ordinary thugs, they are zombie thugs from the Dark Side.

I simply love the story and how it’s told and evolved in Myth 2. It will scare you but it also creates a much more dynamic battlefield when you know what’s at stake. The story is told using a narrator between the missions. As the story is told the player sees some illustrations and the text rolling down the screen.

At first sight Myth 2 might be a bit confusing. As the game is presented in a 3D isometric perspective with a free moving camera it takes some time getting used to. But once you get used to the camera you wouldn’t want it no other way, I’m actually surprised that developers aren’t using this kind of camera more often.

The camera presents you with other views of the battlefield, this means that it’s easier for you to spot weaknesses in your strategy and defence, it works quite well.

A problem with Myth 2 is that you can’t play the evil Dark Side in single player. That is there is only one campaign and that campaign is made only for the light side. However if you choose to play the game in multiplayer you can choose to be the Dark Side.

If you compare Myth 2 to other real-time strategy games you notice that the number of units in Myth 2 are much smaller. Playing the Light Side you have about six units at your disposal and the Dark Side has twelve. I believe Bungie could have taken the time to develop some more units for the Light Side.

When you click a unit in the game you will be presented with a short background story of that particular unit, it’s a very nice way of integrating the story in the game. Too bad more developers don’t use this feature.

Myth 2 lacks the option of playing the game as if it were multiplayer but against the computer as many other strategy games has. I think this is sad because it really adds more to the game play if you can experiment a bit by yourself offline.

So what’s the final verdict? Although Myth 2 might be a bit limited at times it’s still a great real-time strategy game thanks to it’s depth and dynamic game play. If you haven’t tried the game you definitely should.
