Imagine that the Russian revolution never took place and that the Tsar’s reign never felled. Instead the Tsar starts a war in 1917 against the rest of Europe.

This is basically the story of Codename Eagle, a 3D war game released in 1999. It was among the first 3D war games in which you could control vehicles and planes.

In the game you are a commando/spy who will perform different infiltration missions. It can be anything from getting into an airbase and steal important documents or getting into an aircraft carrier.

I really find the missions challenging since you have to interact with a number of elements to perform them. For example you need to steal a truck to get into an airbase and also get uniform. However the interactions doesn’t always work, sometimes you have to meet persons and they tell you what they are up to and what they want you to. Sometimes the directions are so unclear and fuzzy that you don’t know how to proceed and the game just becomes a boring deadlock.

Sometimes you will run into enemy forces, which is less than friendly. Then it’s fire-fighting time, the fights are really good actually. Even though it’s too easy to hit something at a long range, you can shoot at a guard from very far away and always get a perfect hit.

Another flaw is that if you decide to shoot a guard through a fence you will notice that you can’t. However you can see the guard but not shoot him, the AI guard won’t see you either.

The graphics in the game are pretty good. I especially like the sky textures, which makes the game a lot better visually. However objects such as vehicles and signs could have been better. The shading and colors doesn’t always match and they do feel like objects instead of what they suppose to feel like, vehicles and signs.

Codename Eagle is a decent game, however there are a bit too many flaws with the AI and interaction for it to be a success. It can’t compete with games like Medal of Honor, but for fans interested in these types of games it might be interesting.
