Grand Theft Auto 2 was very anticipated and wanted back in 1999 When it was released. The game presented a number of new interactions and features, but the core of the game was the same as in the sequel.

In Grand Theft Auto 2 (GTA2) the society is collapsing and gangs are ruling the city. You need money fast so you decide to take on different missions from the gangs. GTA 2 features a pretty straightforward story.

There are a total of seven gangs in the city however the city is divided into three blocks and in each block there are three gangs. So three gangs will only confront you at a time. The gangs in Grand Theft Auto 2 are the Yakuza (the Japanese mob), Scientists, Looneys (mental patients), Rednecks, Zaibatzu, Russian Mob and Hare Krishnas.

As you make your way through the city you notice cars marked with symbols, these cars are gang cars. For example the Zaibatzu has marked their cars with a Z and the Rednecks with the Dixie flag.

When you enter a gang’s area the payphones will start to ring and you will get a mission if you answer. The missions are very similar to those in Grand Theft Auto and also later versions of the game. That is you kill someone, blow up a car, a building or collect something.

After a while on your crime spree your wanted level will rise. There are five different levels, on level five the Army will be called in. Before that you will have to fight against the FBI, SWAT teams and various other police units.

There are a number of weapons in GTA2, fifteen to be exact. The weapons ranges from handguns and machine guns to electro guns and oil slicks (that can be fitted on your car).

Graphically the game is pretty good. The top down perspective is still there but the lightning and shadow effects are much better than in previous games. To get the most out of the lightning effects you can choose to play at night.

After a while of playing GTA2 I noticed that it wasn’t fun. If you have played a lot of the Grand Theft Auto series, both the first game and the later 3D ones you get somewhat fed up. The problem is that all the games are the same, same types of missions, characters, gangs and car chases.

If Rockstar want to change they need to develop a game where you can play as an police officer and various other professions in the city and not just a thug because this thug thing is getting boring.

However GTA2 is still a good game and if you haven’t played it you definitely should. But it lacks depth and diversity and it feels like a GTA on steroids.
