In Comanche 4 you
will fly a high tech helicopter in some of the world’s most dangerous
places, could it be any better?
The game is based
on the US Armed Forces future attack helicopter Comanche RAH-66. This means
that the game is set in the future and with future hot spots. There are a number
of places you will operate in, the Philippines, Belarus, Syria and many other
places.
I think that Novalogic
have managed to capture the environment pretty good in all the places. I especially
like the Philippines, which looks like a couple of vacation paradise islands,
except that they are cluttered with pirates.
The missions you
will perform are everything from protecting boats, helicopters and other objects
to all out attacks. Often you have to stay out of sight when entering dangerous
areas. To do that you fly close to the ground, which is more fun than it sounds
like.
You have a number
of weapons at your disposal; all of them are standard for the US Armed Forces.
For example hellfire missiles and machine guns. What I really like about the
weapons in the game is that you can really feel the anxiety of the enemy when
firing them.
Graphically Comanche
4 might leave something to be desired. Sure the environments are beautiful and
there are a lot of details. For example when you hover over sand you see dust
rising around you. But the inside view of the helicopter isn’t really
that detailed or nice, and with today’s standards it’s pretty bad.
All targets you
lock onto can be seen in a little display inside the helicopter. So if you unleash
the machine gun on a guard tower you see it falling apart and soldiers fleeing.
It really makes you feel powerful.
A major problem
in the game is learning the controls and the handling of the helicopter. I feel
that Comanche 4 has a somewhat steeper learning curve than other games in the
same genre. But once you learn the handling it’s really loads of fun.
Overall Comanche
4 is a good helicopter simulation that creates feelings that other simulations
can only dream of. Sure it has some faults, but generally the game is a good
experience. Novalogic deserves some extra credits for the level editors that
come with Comanche 4.
